About Us
Hi, I’m Caleb “Hangman” Smith, founder of Maine Train Gear.

My love for the trail started long before I ever thought about making gear. In 2021, I hiked the Appalachian Trail with my brother, forming a trail family known as “The Maine Train.” Truffles, Pimento, Magic, Gooey, Sticks, Slobber, and myself, Hangman.

After that journey, I realized there was a better way to do ultralight gear: trail-tested, thoughtfully designed, and made to last. That’s why I started Maine Train Gear, to create gear that helps other hikers, backpackers, and thru-hikers go further, carry less, and enjoy every mile.
In 2025, we decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail together and this time my wife, Pinky, joined the gang. We took several of my new products on trail with us to find out just how well they will hold up over 2,655 miles. With a combined field testing of over 15,000 miles, this gear has seen ups and down and has came through better than ever.
Our products are engineered for ultralight adventure, built with high-quality materials, and tested in real trail conditions. From zippered food bags to other essential ultralight gear, every item is designed to solve problems I’ve faced on long-distance hikes.
Whether you’re tackling the PCT, the AT, or just escaping for a weekend in the woods, Maine Train Gear is here to help you carry less and hike more.
Follow our journey, trail-test with us, and let’s make your adventure easier one piece of gear at a time.
